Working in the fitness industry means you're likely to come across various eating disorders. Learn how to recognise them and take the right steps to guide those who may be at risk towards help and support.
Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses which unfortunately are becoming more prevalent in society today, both here in the UK and around the world. According to research published by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the eating disorder charity, Beat, they are thought to affect up to 3.4 million people in the UK. Eating disorders are responsible for more deaths than any other mental health conditions, which is why they should be treated with the utmost priority, urgency, sensitivity and professionalism.
Many of the people suffering from an eating disorder have a significantly distorted image of their bodyweight and shape and will seek to control their weight, or lose even more weight, through a combination of food restriction and excessive exercise. Therefore, exercise professionals working in the active leisure sector are well placed to help support, guide and ultimately, empower those with eating disorders to face up to their reality and seek professional help.
This level 3 online eating disorders course, which combines a series of eLearning sessions and online lecture style presentations, is written and presented by a team of clinical and technical experts. The online lectures are presented by our clinical dietician, Claire, who has extensive first-hand experience of diagnosing and treating patients suffering from disordered eating. Claire is also a qualified exercise professional and is actively involved in the health and fitness sector coaching clients to complete ultra-endurance events like ironman.
